| Resumo: | Chatbots are software that interact with users using natural language. They use different automation techniques in conversations, allowing users to have a more natural interaction and exchange information between man and machine. In the context of Information Science (IS), chatbots are inserted in themes that involve information representation, organization, and retrieval. This research aimed to investigate studies on chatbots in the Brazilian context in the academic literature. Methodologically, the study is characterized as exploratory and descriptive research that used a bibliographical search in the Scopus, Web of Science, and BRAPCI databases in the first half of 2024, mapping the studies by year, area, and objective. It was observed that the year with the highest number of publications was 2021. The area with the highest concentration of studies was Computer Science. Regarding the objectives, applications for guidance and customer service, education, and some types of operational automation stand out, with a focus on reducing costs. It is concluded that chatbots are consolidating as fundamental tools in communicating with users, offering personalized service and efficient solutions in automating processes in different sectors of society. However, these tools must align with IS techniques and fundamentals, which justifies this study and identifies gaps for new investigations and applications of chatbots in IS. |
