In turn, IECs are critical for maintaining the intestinal barrier and can secrete and respond to various mediators that regulate the immune response in the gut.The Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) is a mechanism triggered by the accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins within the ER lumen, a condition known as Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress. The UPR plays a critical role in maintaining the homeostasis of the intestinal epithelium by keeping the balance between the microbiota, IECs and the immune response.
