Through its inhabitants’ narratives and the observation of their daily life, the article aims to comprehend the historical processes of formation and constitution of these people’s particular lifestyle, who are circumscribed in an area which predominates German and Polish descendants. While constructing their identity, ethnic distinction was an important aspect for the Correia family to define themselves as “quilombola” and take on this role. The fact that there are various perceptions about the remaining category of quilombos in the community implies the necessity to considerate in the research the multiplicity of possible definitions.Na localidade de São Paulo das Tunas, em Giruá/RS, ainda hoje se identifica a “casa dos morenos”, lugar onde habita a comunidade rural Quilombo Correa. O artigo objetiva compreender, por meio das narrativas dos seus moradores e da observação do seu modo de vida e de trabalho, os processos históricos de formação e constituição de um estilo particular de vida por parte dessas pessoas, que estão circunscritas numa região na qual predominam descendentes dos imigrantes de origem alemã e polonesa. Na construção da sua identidade, a distinção étnica revelou-se um aspecto importante para a família Correia se autodefinir como quilombola e assumir essa condição.
