Through its inhabitants’ narratives and the observation of their daily life, the article aims to comprehend the historical processes of formation and constitution of these people’s particular lifestyle, who are circumscribed in an area which predominates German and Polish descendants. While constructing their identity, ethnic distinction was an important aspect for the Correia family to define themselves as “quilombola” and take on this role. The fact that there are various perceptions about the remaining category of quilombos in the community implies the necessity to considerate in the research the multiplicity of possible definitions.
