| Sumario: | During the first half of the nineteenth century, the capital of the Pernambuco province,Recife, was made up mostly of free blacks, freedmen and slaves. The enslaved not accepting the domination imposed by the masters imposed their resistance to the slave system, one of these reactions were the escapes that in the view of the enslaved was oneof the ways to conquer their freedom. The slaveholders used the press to publicize slave evasions with the intention of reclaiming their “commodity”, which defied the authorities, fled, and devised strategies to stay away from captivity. |
