| Resumo: | This article aims to analyze the growing debate surrounding the institution of slavery, emancipation, and the transition to freedom in the second half of the 19th Century in the Empire of Brazil. We will examine the trajectory of FatherFrancisco Gonçalves Barroso, who served as the priest of the Nossa Senhora Mãe dos Homens parish in Porto Feliz. To achieve this, we draw upon a varied documentarycorpus: baptismal records of slaves, freedom suits, post mortem inventories, and newspapers. An emblematic figure in the region, he moved among the prominent names of the town and played a fundamental role in the reform processes that took place in the city. However, his dynamic political engagement was crucial in fostering a network of solidarity with slaves around him. Thus, the focus is not on the personal triumphs and challenges experienced by the priest; rather, his biography provides insight into the disputes over the legitimacy of the slaveholding society and the emergence of abolitionism in 19th Century Brazil. |
