| Sumario: | Annotated partial (M 1. 41-96) translation of the treatise Against the Grammarians, written by the Pyrrhonian Skeptic philosopher Sextus Empiricus, around the second century C.E. In this section Sextus begins his refutation of Hellenistic Grammar which, in this period, was concerned with philological and literary studies: correction, edition, exegesis and evaluation of the literary canon. He questions the value of this discipline, criticizes its definitions and the claims made by the grammarians, and then sets out which divisions and parts will be considered in the treatise. The notes to the translation are intended to clarify translational choices and to contextualize and widen the Sextian discussion. |
