| Resumo: | The serious socio-environmental problems present in contemporary times demand reflections in the political, social, environmental and educational fields, both at a global and local level. We are interested here in making a local reflection on these dimensions, using citizens’ perceptions as a reference. The objective of this work was to understand the perceptions of the Saco riverside community regarding socio-environmental preservation and their environment, and also to identify the environmental problems faced in the daily lives of the habitants of Codó (MA). The research took place through interviews with riverside residents of the Saco Community, located in the municipality of Codó (MA) and the application of a questionnaire with Codó residents of the urban area. There is a shortage of environmental education actions in the community, and a shortage in the provision of essential public services, such as quality public health and education. Among the main environmental problems cited by participants, the following stand out: the lack of treatment of municipal water and sewage; the occurrence of fires; the disposal of garbage in inappropriate places and open sewage. The absence of public policies that can meet the needs of community residents and encourage the construction of sustainability as a sociocultural principle, value and practice is also reinforced. |
