| Resumo: | The Braille system represents a complex set of information that enables the communication and education of people with visual impairment. Objective: to discuss the Braille system as a tool or instrument in the literacy of the visually impaired. Methodology: literature review, through articles published in the SCiELO databases and in the Digital Bank of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD). Theoretical Framework: Learning in all disciplines, such as mathematics, humanities and social sciences, is directly linked to reading and writing skills and the ability to collect, use and transmit information. Undoubtedly, literate people can excel in school and move into adulthood with competitive advantages for employment and life that are less possible for those who do not master them well or do not have them. Final Considerations: In today's world, literacy, i.e. the ability to read and write, is vital to the success of education, a career and quality of life. Whether it's focusing on a good book, dialing a phone number, making a shopping list, or writing a report on a computer, being literate means effectively participating in society. Learning to read and write in Braille can make a huge difference in the life of a visually impaired child or adult. |
