Through a qualitative approach and the intersection of different historical sources, various forms of resistance of the captives to the slave system during the 19th century are analyzed. The documents used are letters of manumission registered in a notary, criminal processes, post mortem inventories, records of baptisms, marriages and deaths, list of classification of slaves to be freed by the Emancipation Fund, reports from the provincial presidency and periodicals..El objetivo principal de este artículo es comprender las estrategias de resistencia que las personas esclavizadas y liberadas utilizaron en la lucha contra la esclavitud, las acciones en la búsqueda de sus derechos, libertad y autonomía. El lugar de la investigación está ubicado en el municipio de Alegrete, en el límite occidental de Rio Grande do Sul. Mediante un enfoque cualitativo y la intersección de diferentes fuentes históricas, se analizan diversas formas de resistencia de los cautivos al sistema esclavista durante el siglo XIX. Los documentos utilizados son cartas de manumisión registradas ante notario, procesos penales, inventarios post mortem, actas de bautizos, matrimonios y defunciones, listado de clasificación de esclavos a ser liberados por el Fondo de Emancipación, informes de la presidencia provincial y periódicos.O presente artigo tem como objetivo principal compreender as estratégias de resistência que escravizados e libertos utilizaram na luta contra a escravidão, as ações na busca por seus direitos, liberdade e autonomia. O lócus da pesquisa se situa no município de Alegrete, fronteira oeste do Rio Grande do sul. Através da abordagem qualitativa e o cruzamento de diversas fontes históricas se analisa várias formas de resistência dos cativos perante o sistema escravista no decorrer do século XIX.
