description The cities of Ouro Preto and Mariana were the center of intense gold mining activities in the colonial period (Eighteenth century); this has left remnants and traces up to the present time. After the end of the mining activities and their related cities, this setting was preserved until the 1970s, when the occupation of these urban areas began to take place. At this time, there was much degradation of the former mines due to the unawareness of the importance of these buildings. In the 1990s, some studies were conducted in order to preserve the heritage of these areas, by registering and mapping mine ruins, structures and underground galleries. Today there is a good knowledge of the existing archaeological collection. In this context, there is great demand to announce the existence, the importance and the studies made with this collection to the local communities. Thus, the present extension project was designed to fill in this gap and encourage greater participation of the population in the preservation of this archaeological heritage, seeking to create a link between the existing academic knowledge and the communities located where there was gold extraction in the eighteenth century. The project focused on five communities; however, in two of them, external factors prevented the continuity of the work. The main activities were the inventory and collection of data and information about the places, meetings and workshops with the communities addressing the heritage and the history of the gold mining in the eighteenth century, as well as tours in the archaeological areas and discussions on the subject. The project also focused on mapping and evaluating of the stability of some underground mines that are currently explored for tourism by residents of one of the communities.

El fin de las actividades mineras y, consecuentemente de las ciudades, hizo que este acervo fuese preservado hasta la década de 1970, cuando se inició el proceso de ocupación urbana de estas áreas, muchas veces con la degradación del patrimonio, por la depredación de los remanentes de la antigua minería, casi siempre por el desconocimiento de la importancia de esos lugares. En la década de 1990 se iniciaron estudios en dichas áreas con el abordaje de la preservación patrimonial, el registro y mapeo de ruinas, estructuras de minería y galerías subterráneas, logrando que hoy se tenga un buen conocimiento del acervo existente. En este contexto, hay una gran demanda por la divulgación de la existencia e importancia de este acervo y de los estudios que se realizaron hasta el momento sobre el tema junto con las comunidades que habitan estas áreas. Así, el proyecto de extensión aquí relatado fue desarrollado para intentar llenar esta laguna y fomentar una mayor participación de la población en la preservación de este patrimonio arqueológico, buscando crear una relación entre el conocimiento académico hoy existente y las comunidades que residen en los lugares donde hubo extracción de oro en el siglo XVIII. El proyecto se concentró en cinco comunidades; sin embargo en dos de las mismas, factores externos impidieron la continuidad de los trabajos. Las principales actividades desarrolladas fueron el inventario y la recolección de datos e informaciones acerca de los lugares, realización de reuniones y charlas con las comunidades abordando el patrimonio y la historia de la minería de oro en el siglo XVIII, caminatas por los sitios arqueológicos y debates sobre el tema. También formó parte del proyecto el mapeo y la evaluación de la estabilidad de algunas minas subterráneas que están siendo actualmente explotadas turísticamente por moradores de una de las comunidades objeto de las actividades del proyecto.As cidades de Ouro Preto e Mariana foram palco de intensas atividades de mineração do ouro no período colonial (Século XVIII), que deixaram remanescentes e vestígios até os dias atuais. O esvaziamento das atividades mineiras e, consequentemente das cidades, fez com que este acervo fosse preservado até a década de 1970, quando iniciou-se o processo de ocupação urbana destas áreas, muitas vezes com a degradação do patrimônio, pela depredação dos resquícios da antiga mineração, quase sempre pelo desconhecimento da importância destes locais. Na década de 1990 iniciaram-se estudos nestas áreas com a abordagem da preservação patrimonial, com o cadastramento e mapeamento de ruínas, estruturas de mineração e galerias subterrâneas, sendo que hoje tem-se um bom conhecimento do acervo existente. Neste contexto, há uma grande demanda pela divulgação da existência e importância deste acervo e dos estudos que até o momento foram realizados sobre o tema junto ás comunidades que habitam estas áreas. Assim, o projeto de extensão aqui relatado foi desenvolvido para tentar preencher esta lacuna e fomentar uma maior participação da população na preservação deste patrimônio arqueológico, buscando criar um elo entre o conhecimento acadêmico hoje existente e as comunidades que residem nos locais onde houve a extração de ouro no século XVIII. O projeto focou cinco comunidades, porém em duas destas, fatores externos impediram a continuidade dos trabalhos. As principais atividades desenvolvidas foram o inventário e coleta de dados e informações acerca dos locais, realização de reuniões e palestras junto às comunidades abordando o patrimônio e a história da mineração do ouro no Século XVIII, caminhadas pelos sítios arqueológicos e debates sobre o tema.
