Sumario:This paper aims to demonstrate that João Capistrano Honório de Abreu (1853-1927) was one of the most important historians of his time, achieving great acclaim among his peers thanks to its enormous intellectual authority. Capistrano has maintained a critical position in relation to the historiography of the nineteenth and the institutions that made the place of history of the period. The relative independence of Capistrano for the institutions that comprise the place of history, especially the Brazilian Institute of Geography and History, stems from the social networks that he weaves throughout his life. The imagined political community as the central character has capistraneana thePeople, and is marked by tension between Nation/People on one side, against the State/Government of another.
