Resumo:Family-based farming holds an important role in Brazilian economy, accounting for over a third of the agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP) formation, generating income and subsistence for family-based farmers. Nevertheless, given the last decades, the rural population has decreased, due to rural exodus, mainly by the fact of young farmers exit. To the context, the essay is addressed to analyze the most relevant factors which are triggering the event of rural exodus from the youngsters in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) Northwest´s Colonial side. There had been certain analyses to the profile and the social economic status of 68 young migrants, who render labor activities in urban areas, and based on secondary data it was evidenced the number of municipalities where young migration was more expressive. The results appoint to the factors related to income (lack of satisfactory income) and public policies (lack of public policies) to contribute to the rural exodus, as to be considered two of the main features for the decision making in terms of discontinuing the succession in the family-based farming activities.
