| Sumario: | This text is an essay on sociological theory that aims to test the limits of Ulrich Beck’s sociology of risk and the possibilities of its use regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. The starting point of this exercise is Beck’s own theoretical basis. It is a provocative text but does not necessarily establish an antagonism with his sociology, and it can be understood as an essay “with Beck and against Beck”, which works towards a methodological cosmopolitanism. Nonetheless, as a theoretical endeavor, this exercise considers the development of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and worldwide as an empirical basis capable of showing the explanatory power of Beck’s theory and of challenging some of its assumptions. The result is a delineation of theoretical possibilities based on a post-colonial critique and on propositions of Beck’s own sociology in writings found in collaborative works and revisions of his own methodological cosmopolitanism. |
