With the expansion of the concept of heritage and the incorporation of the urban historical sites as listed by the government, created the need for actions aimed at the conservation of these monuments and taking into account the dynamics of this heritage. The measures adopted in the past to preserve isolated monuments are inefficient for the conservation of urban space, because the inherent characteristic of cities, which are constantly evolving. Information was taken in the documents that are in the physical archives of the State Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage of Minas Gerais and tables were compiled, in order to facilitate the visualization of commonalities and variations between different sites. Based on comparisons of these tables, it was tried to identify the posture adopted by the agency in dealing with protected sites, in its forty years (1971-2011) of operation. Identifying points of similarity and disagreement between the actions, sought to draw a profile of the management of the historical sites listed by the State of Minas Gerais.A gestão dos núcleos históricos se funde com a gestão urbana e com a busca pelo desenvolvimento da cidade. No caso desses bens, não há como separar a preservação da gestão urbana e a proteção patrimonial deixa de ser apenas uma questão cultural para se tornar uma questão multidisciplinar. Com a ampliação do conceito de patrimônio e a incorporação dos núcleos urbanos como bens tombados pelo poder público, criou-se a necessidade de estabelecer ações visando à conservação desses bens e, levando-se em consideração a dinamicidade deste patrimônio. As medidas antes adotadas para a preservação de monumentos isolados se mostraram ineficientes para a conservação do espaço urbano, pela característica inerente às cidades, que estão em constante evolução. Informações foram levantadas nos documentos que estão nos arquivos físicos do Instituto Estadual do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico de Minas Gerais e foram elaboradas tabelas, de forma a facilitar a visualização dos pontos comuns e das variações ocorridas entre os diversos núcleos. Com base nas comparações dessas tabelas, buscou-se identificar a postura adotada pelo órgão no trato dos núcleos tombados, nesses quarenta anos (1971-2011) de atuação. Identificando pontos de semelhança e discordância entre as ações, procurou-se traçar um perfil da gestão dos núcleos tombados pelo Estado de Minas Gerais. Além disso, buscou-se verificar como o planejamento urbano dos municípios que possuem núcleos tombados trata a questão patrimonial e a relação entre o planejamento e a preservação.
