Descripción
Sumario:This article aims to address the dispute between Eugênio Gudin and Roberto Simonsen over the direction of economic planning in Brazil after the end of the Estado Novo and the Second World War as a controversy between two types of liberalism. Having as theoretical support the contributions of Michael Freeden and José Guilherme Merquior, we argue that Eugênio Gudin started from a liberalism linked to a political imaginary of the First Republic, with an economistic matrix, which naturalized the concept of market and laissez-faire. Roberto Simonsen, on the other hand, would be an expression of a Keynesian-type liberalism that emerged in the post-war period and in which the State is seen as necessary to keep the economy and society functional.
