| Sumario: | The use of verb tenses and moods is an aspect that draws attention in Graciliano Ramos’s novel Vidas secas (1938, Barren Lives, 1965). Indeed, at a first reading, the reason why the author uses the subjunctive mood in some of the novel’s sentences is not obvious. Driven by this question, the present bibliographical and experimental survey intends to analyze some of the atypical uses of this verb mood in Vidas secas. These atypical uses - called temporal engagement – are worth investigating due the frequency of such verb tenses and moods in contexts they would not normally appear. In many cases of temporal engagement observed in the novel, the verb form could be used in the past tense of the indicative mood instead of the past tense of the subjunctive mood. Assuming that in literature style and content always come together, this research focuses on investigating the reasons underlying Ramos’ choices and motivation for the use of these peculiar verb forms. Based on the possible meanings expressed by the subjunctive mood, this survey departs from the hypothesis that the use of temporal engagement could add some aspects of uncertainty, imprecision and hesitation to the scenes in which it appears. In order to test this hypothesis, an analysis of the engaged sentences as they appear in the text of the novel is carried out. Literary theory principles guide the reading of Graciliano Ramos’ use of language resources and style. The qualitative analysis of the engaged sentences in the novel showed that the use of the subjunctive past tense causes the effect of imprecision and also of unpredictability of the action or state expressed by the verbal forms studied. In that sense, this research throws light at some important meaning effects that are vital to the construction of meaning in the entire narrative, leading to a more thorough understanding of the author’s writing |
