The use of verb tenses and moods is an aspect that draws attention in Graciliano Ramos’s novel Vidas secas (1938, Barren Lives, 1965). Indeed, at a first reading, the reason why the author uses the subjunctive mood in some of the novel’s sentences is not obvious. Driven by this question, the present bibliographical and experimental survey intends to analyze some of the atypical uses of this verb mood in Vidas secas. These atypical uses - called temporal engagement – are worth investigating due the frequency of such verb tenses and moods in contexts they would not normally appear. In many cases of temporal engagement observed in the novel, the verb form could be used in the past tense of the indicative mood instead of the past tense of the subjunctive mood. Assuming that in literature style and content always come together, this research focuses on investigating the reasons underlying Ramos’ choices and motivation for the use of these peculiar verb forms. Based on the possible meanings expressed by the subjunctive mood, this survey departs from the hypothesis that the use of temporal engagement could add some aspects of uncertainty, imprecision and hesitation to the scenes in which it appears. In order to test this hypothesis, an analysis of the engaged sentences as they appear in the text of the novel is carried out. Literary theory principles guide the reading of Graciliano Ramos’ use of language resources and style. The qualitative analysis of the engaged sentences in the novel showed that the use of the subjunctive past tense causes the effect of imprecision and also of unpredictability of the action or state expressed by the verbal forms studied. In that sense, this research throws light at some important meaning effects that are vital to the construction of meaning in the entire narrative, leading to a more thorough understanding of the author’s writing |

Movido por essa indagação, este trabalho de cunho bibliográfico e experimental tem o objetivo de analisar algumas dessas ocorrências nebulosas do modo verbal em Vidas secas, que são chamadas de embreagem temporal, devido ao interesse despertado pela observação da recorrência de tempos e modos verbais utilizados fora de seu contexto mais usual. Em diversos casos de embreagem temporal verificados no romance, notase que a forma verbal poderia ter sido empregada no tempo pretérito perfeito, imperfeito ou mais-que-perfeito do modo indicativo em lugar do pretérito do modo subjuntivo, como de fato se observa na obra. Assim, partindo-se dos pressupostos de que, sobretudo na literatura, forma e conteúdo são indissociáveis, e, portanto, de que há uma razão que motiva a ocorrência das formas verbais empregadas, esta pesquisa busca analisar o uso de tais expressões na obra em questão de modo a compreender quais são essas motivações. A partir do conhecimento sobre os possíveis sentidos veiculados pelo modo subjuntivo, propõe-se, nesta pesquisa, a hipótese segundo a qual o fenômeno da embreagem temporal conferiria uma conotação de incerteza, imprecisão e hesitação às cenas em que aparecem. Para testar essa hipótese inicial, além da análise das sentenças em questão e do romance como um todo, este estudo também utiliza ferramentas da teoria literária de modo a contribuir com o conhecimento sobre a escrita de Graciliano Ramos a partir de mecanismos de linguagem empregados pelo autor. De fato, a análise qualitativa das sentenças embreadas da obra revelou que o emprego do pretérito do subjuntivo no romance produz os efeitos de imprecisão e também de imprevisibilidade da ação ou do estado enunciados pelas formas verbais estudadas.
