| Resumo: | This article is an analysis about the thin line between the progress idea – popular at the beginning of the 20th century – in opposition to the preservationist ideas that grew stronger in Brazil at the same period. At the core of this debate is SPHAN - National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute – created in 1936 and responsible for the preservationist practices in this period. By analyzing journals and headlines from 1940 to 1960, I aimed to understand how such disputes evolved socially and how the institute, representative of a nationalist politics, balanced modern and traditional. |
