| Sumario: | This article analyzes the debate held by the provincial deputies of Paraná in 1859 on the effects of the policy of conciliation. Through a case study, the objective of this work is to produce knowledge about the perceptions of regional elites of the consequences of the party conciliation implemented during the Ministerial Cabinet chaired by the Marquis of Paraná (1853-1856). Firstly, it is made evident that most of the participants in that debate were in favor of party conciliation. Their arguments were analogous to those of members of the imperial elite who endorsed such a policy. Second, it is worthy of note that the few debaters against conciliation maintained that, in Paraná, it promoted the political strengthening of the Liberal Party. In that province, therefore, a criticism of conciliation was motivated by the lack of space for a wing of the Conservative Party in the schemes for filling public positions. |
