| Resumo: | Changes in how Dentistry is taught are essential in light of the Curricular Guidelines for Undergraduate Dental Courses (approved by the National Council of Education) and the participation of dental surgeons in the Family Health Program. These changes are necessary in order to make dental students have the right professional profile demanded by the labour market. There is now more emphasis on raising students’ awareness of Brazilian economics, politics, sociology and culture. The Federal University of Piauí is located in one of the poorest Brazilian states; and the undergraduate dental course has tried to make students aware of the needs of the population that they will treat. Patients who are treated at the Supervised Internship discipline of the Dental School are treated holistically, not just considering specific symptoms. In this context, students become involved in intra- and extramural activities during their last term to witness the realities of different communities. |
