Resumo:This article was developed from the study of genre cartoon. For both, it was examined whether the interpretation of cartoons by 25 teachers of public schools of Fortaleza, taking as reference the intertextuality and the irony. The first because this is a fundamental element for the construction of the cartoon’sdiscourse. The second because this is a significant resource for instigating the criticism to a current event within the social context in which it occurs. The intertextuality was examined based on levels and techniques created by Bazerman (2006); and the irony based on studies of Brait (2008), which conceives this linguistic feature as a polyphonic phenomenon. The work investigates if to construct meaning in interpretation of the charge and if to understand your criticism is necessary that there is a direct correlation between the understanding of Intertextuality and of irony. After the analysis of the corpus, it was found that the intertextuais elements participate in the construction of the meaning in cartoon, but do not guarantee the understanding of irony, and this is much less noticeable when the cartoon associates verbal text and not verbal text. The reader relies more on the slopes of the verbal text to interpret the context of cartoon and hardly understands the message only relyingon drawing.
