Resumo:This article explores the issue of socio-spatial segregation, focusing on the concentration of urban poverty and its detrimental effects on the education of young residents in slums. Through a research study combining theory and fieldwork, the concepts of Neighborhood Effect and Assets, Vulnerability and Opportunity Structure, with the dialogues collected in the interviews with young residents of the Favelas da Maré, in Rio de Janeiro. The main objective of this article is to critically analyze the literature on these topics, drawing on insights from the field research, in order to validate or challenge the adopted theoretical framework. The findings underscore the multifaceted nature of the challenges faced by marginalized youth in poverty-stricken contexts, emphasizing the urgent need to prioritize the establishment of a just and egalitarian society
