| Sumario: | The main interest of this article is to understand the institutional intricacies of the Court of the Holy Office in its exercise of social classification, with special attention to the weight that public fame had in the evaluation of candidacies at two different moments in the Court’s history, with the help of the reconstitution and analysis of goldsmith Antônio Pereira Colaço’s life. This character's life path, from an aspiring familiar of the Holy Office to a defendant arrested and prosecuted by the Inquisition, makes his career a procedural archetype that is quite representative of the circumstances experienced by many in the face of the institution's punitive and also classificatory power. The examination of this plot aims to collaborate with the understanding of the historicity of the symbolic regimes of the inquisitorial career and, to some extent, with the measurement of the impact that the Inquisition had on stigmatization and social exclusion in the Portuguese Old Regime. |
