| Sumario: | The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was opened for signature on 2017, and in October 2019 the treaty had 79 signatories. However, no one Nuclear-Weapon State has signed the treaty. This article argues that the TPNW is both an innovation in the nuclear nonproliferation regime and a treaty that is unfitted to achieve its objective due the lack of support from the major powers of the international system, as well as the absence of the main countries that could determine or influence the international system on issues related to nuclear weapons. In the first section of the article, the scope and objectives of the treaty are addressed, and the following section presents an analysis of the profiles of the TPNW signatories. The last section contains a prospective view of the treaty. |
