Journalists, category, at the time, still fluid in professional terms, enjoyed social legitimacy, being linked to the production, circulation and dissemination of values (MICELI, 2001), and are taken as intellectuals "in the sense of the writer or scholar who takes a stand on public issues” (BURKE, 2016, p. 51). Based on a broad conceptualization of intellectuals, as proposed by Jean-François Sirinelli (1998, 2003), professional teachers and educators are included in this investigation.As reflexões apresentadas pautam-se no exame da imprensa periódica de Mato Grosso, no tocante à investigação de aspectos relacionados ao papel exercido por este suporte, na formatação de intelectuais mediadores entre o conhecimento e a sociedade durante os anos de 1880 a 1920. Os jornalistas, categoria, à época, ainda fluída em termos profissionais, desfrutavam de legitimidade social, vinculando-se à produção, circulação e divulgação de valores (MICELI, 2001), e são tomados como intelectuais “no sentido do escritor ou erudito que se posiciona sobre questões públicas” (BURKE, 2016, p. 51).
