Resumo:This paper focuses on the relationship between formal linguistics and the teaching of grammar in Primary Education, to discuss how the scientific study of language can contribute to the renewal of the teaching of certain grammatical phenomena at this level of school education, especially those whose analyses remain controversial even in recent linguistic research. Our focus is on a specific topic: the different uses of adjectives, notably the predicative use of these attributes, such as séria ‘serious’ in Maria fez o trabalho séria ‘Maria did her work serious’ (lit.), and their supposed adverbial use (attribute without –mente), such as rápido ‘fast’ in Ana andou rápido ‘Ana walked fast’. Our interest in the relationship between this topic and teaching stems from a few reasons: (i) some students have had difficulty distinguishing between these two uses; (ii) sentences in which the adjective is in the form corresponding to the masculine singular can present ambiguity between a predicative reading and an adverbial reading of the attribute, as occurs in Ele trabalhou sério ‘He worked serious’ (lit.), and students have to understand the phenomenon of ambiguity and understand that different interpretations must be associated with different syntactic structures (Franchi; Negrão; Müller, 2006); (iii) although there is still no consensus in linguistic research about the proper analysis of sentences with the attribute without –mente (Lobato, 2008; Foltran, 2010), this content is already covered in grammars, as well as in public exams, and this shows that High School graduates are expected to have a certain familiarity with the subject. To deal with the interaction between linguistics and teaching, we based our observations on the work of Lobato (2015, 2018), Guerra-Vicente e Pilati (2012), among others. Next, we discuss adjectives and their different uses, presenting suggestions on how to approach this content in the classroom.
