Summary:The species Kappaphycus alvarezii is a marine macroalgae of the Phylum of the Rhodophyta, used worldwide for the extraction of carrageenan, a hydrocolloid of industrial application, besides being extremely rich in biocomposites of biotechnological interest. The objective of this work was to identify the trends in the use of this macroalgae, and thus to motivate the development of algiculture in Brazil. The topics of greatest interest were cultivation, bioactive, nutrition, bioproducts, and biostimulants. For this, the following databases were consulted: Web of Science, Science direct, Scopus, Pubmed, Espacenet, and INPI, in the period 1999-2019. The results confirmed growing worldwide interest in the use of macroalgae and highlighted the leadership of China, Malaysia and Brazil in scientific publications, while the patentometric study presented China as a leader in deposits, followed by the United States and Japan, indicating the need for closer production scientific and productive activity so that Brazil stands out in the development of algiculture.
