Sumario:HISTORY AND LANGUAGE INQUISITORIAL LAWSUIT ANALYSIS: THE BIGAMOUS MARIA FERREIRA CONDEMNED BY THE INQUISITION IN XVII CENTURY         ABSTRACT The present study analyses the inquisitorial lawsuit of the Portuguese lady Maria Ferreira, condemned in 1673 by the Santo Ofício Court to a seven-year-banishment in Brazil. She was accused of bigamy, a condition considered as a crime by the Church, a great sin and a  serious heresy suspicion. The lawsuit analysis is carried out under a historical, religious and juridical perspective, as well as a linguistic one, by means of the description and analysis of the terms used in the lawsuit by the Inquisition judges. The inquisitorial vocabulary analysis aims at demonstrating that the language uses reveal the culture and the ways of thinking of a society and of a time.   KEY WORDS:  history, inquisition; bigamy; language.
