Resumo:The Cursinho Popular Guimarães Rosa is an extension project of the Federal University of Minas Gerais that offers a preparatory course for entry into Higher Education for low-income young people. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, face-to-face activities were interrupted, and new pedagogical, management and planning strategies were applied. Objective: to present and contextualize the project's practices and discuss the challenges arising from the scenario of social isolation. Limitations in internet access, lack of equipment and damage to mental health were decisive in this scenario and tried to be alleviated to avoid abandoning studies. However, student persistence decreased over the period, suggesting economic factors as determinants of retention in studies. Access to quality education is essential to reduce economic inequalities, however, public policies that guarantee resources so that young people can dedicate themselves to learning are necessary to achieve this objective and reduce dropout rates.
