Nor was the enactment of general liberation laws sufficient to end the captivity of the indigenous and their descendants. In Mariana, an important mining nucleus in the interior of Portuguese America, the legal provisions did not guarantee the freedom of these subjects. However, this legislation influenced the processes of enslavement, as well as those of resistance to them, as shown by some civil actions produced in the second half of the 18th century.As formas de exploração da mão de obra indígena, em especial a escravidão, constituem temáticas pouco exploradas pela historiografia brasileira. Mas, diferente do que se costuma pensar, a escravidão não se reduziu a uma experiência africana. Tampouco a promulgação das leis gerais de libertação puseram fim ao cativeiro dos indígenas e seus descendentes. Em Mariana, um importante núcleo de mineração no interior da América portuguesa, os dispositivos legais não garantiram a liberdade de todos.
