| Resumo: | RESUMO As transformações que Porto Alegre começa a vivenciar em meados do século XX mostram as contradições e os conflitos de um Brasil em vias de modernizar-se, mas ainda com traços caracteristicamente arcaicos. Os espaços de sociabilidade não se restringem mais apenas ao ambiente privado, estendendo-se para espaços públicos, como as ruas, cinemas, cafés, transportes, praças etc. Mudam os lugares e mudam os frequentadores e suas práticas, tornando-se mais diversificada a convivência no meio urbano. Entre o espaço da casa e seu entorno imediato, os arrabaldes, onde os habitantes da cidade desenvolviam relações de proximidade com seus vizinhos ou conhecidos, e o centro da cidade, que passava por intensas e diversas transformações, num fluxo cada vez maior de pessoas e veículos, os porto-alegrenses iam, aos poucos, ampliando as sociabilidades, encontrando-se entre desconhecidos e configurando multidões. Este artigo discute as mudanças que ocorreram nos usos dos espaços públicos a partir da ampliação das sociabilidades públicas. O tempo histórico é do final do século XIX até a década de 1940, período conhecido como o da modernização da cidade. A sociabilidade, “habilidade do social” na perspectiva de Georg Simmel (1976), se apresenta como uma dimensão da modernidade e permite problematizar as interações entre os indivíduos no espaço urbano. Olhar o passado, a partir desse conceito e em perspectiva dialética com o presente, é uma das formas encontradas para pensar os espaços públicos e as interações ético-políticas que nele ocorrem nos dias atuais. ABSTRACT The transformations that Porto Alegre began to experience in the mid-twentieth century show the contradictions and conflicts of a Brazil in the process of modernizing itself, but still with archaic and patrimonial traits. Sociability spaces are no longer restricted to the private environment, extending to public spaces such as streets, cinemas, cafes, transport, squares, etc. The places change and the regulars and their practices change, making the coexistence in the urban environment more diversified. Between the space of the house and its immediate surroundings, the outskirts, where the city's inhabitants developed close relationships with their neighbors or acquaintances, and the city center, which was undergoing intense and diverse transformations, in a greater flow of people and vehicles, the people from Porto Alegre were, little by little, expanding their sociability, finding themselves among strangers and configuring crowds. This article discusses the changes that occurred in the uses of public spaces from the expansion of public sociabilities. The historic time is the end of the 19th century until the 1940s, a period known as the modernization of the city. Sociability, “the skill of the social” from the perspective of Georg Simmel (1976), presents itself as a dimension of modernity and allows us to problematize the interactions between individuals in the urban space. Looking at the past, from this concept and in a dialectical perspective with the present, is one of the ways found to think about public spaces and the ethical-political interactions that take place in it today.
