Descripción
Sumario:During the 1930s, several low-income workers who settled in the working-class neighborhood of Rocinha, located in the south of Rio de Janeiro, led a strong associative movement aimed at leisure and religiosity. Opposite to the scholars who looked to favela residents’ associations for their forms of political action, this article intends to understand the proper logic of action of the members of those associations formed by the residents of Rocinha. It is about investigating how the associative experience carried out by these subjects at that moment may have fed their organization and mobilization, expressed in their claim for rights for the group of local residents. The intention is to demonstrate, from the analysis of newspapers, notary registers and oral testimonies, that this experience contributed to the construction of solidarity networks and the struggle for their citizenship.
