It is argued that although the dominant gender ideology hierarchically separated the sexes and confined women to a subordinated domestic sphere, it was continually being challenged by the structure of production which frequently involved men and women and was located in the home. The second part begins by documenting how economic modernization altered the structure of production in Sonora and transformed the middle class labor market. These changes initiated the professionalization-salarization of the middle class which separeted work from the domestic sphere and led to women's isolation as reproductive workers in the home.El artículo documenta y analiza el efecto desigual de la modernización económica sobre los hombres y las mujeres de la clase media de Hermosillo, Sonora, después de 1940. La primera parte describe la ideología y la práctica de género en Hermosillo en la época previa a la modernización. Se observa que la ideología de segregación jerárquica, donde las mujeres estaban confinadas a espacios privados y subordinados, estaba mediada por una realidad productiva en que los hombres y las mujeres frecuentemente trabajaban en espacios y labores comunes. La segunda parte documenta cómo la modernización agrícola, al alterar la estructura productiva del estado, transformó las opciones de trabajo para la clase media y subvirtió las relaciones de género. Se argumenta que la modernización estimuló la profesionalización-asalarización de la clase media. Paulatinamente, se fue convirtiendo en una clase cuyos hogares dependían de un trabajador, casi siempre un hombre, que trabajaba lejos del hogar.
