DISTRIBUCION ALTITUDINAL DE LAS AVES EN UNA ZONA MONTAÑOSA AL SUR DE NAYARIT

There has always been an interest and a need in the human being to understand the way in which species are distributed (Navarro, 1989), as well as the causes and mechanisms that have shaped their distribution (Navarro and Sánchez - González, 2002). From their first explorations, naturalists observed that living beings are not homogeneously distributed, and that contrary to this, species richness behaves according to distribution patterns (Gaston, 2000, Navarro and Sanchez-Gonzalez, 2002, Gaston and Spicer , 2004; Koleff et al., 2008) One of the first distribution patterns observed was the change in species richness with respect to its altitudinal position, where the number of species decreases with increasing elevation (Llorente et al. 2000 ; Lomolino, 2001; McCain and Grytnes, 2010). However, this pattern was accepted until John Terborgh and collaborators conducted a study on the distribution of birds in a altitudinal gradient of the Peruvian Andes (Terborgh and Weske, 1975, Terborgh, 1977). During the following two decades, the linear and inverse relationship between the number of species and the elevation became an assumed pattern for both the group of birds, and for other taxonomic groups (Lomolino, 2001). However, a new debate when, through an extensive review, Rahbek (1995) found that the observed pattern was rather the result of the methodological approach, since the studies that reported it did not consider the effect of the area in its analysis.
