Sumario:The discharges of wastewaters coming from the Petrochemical Industry have great relevance world wide, due to the presence of aromatic compounds, ammonium and high concentrations of sulfide mainly, which have an adverse impact in natural ecosystems and public health. Therefore the necessity to find biological systems that remove from residual waters discharges and avoid further a deterioration to the water bodies. In this work, a biological denitrification process was used for the simultaneous elimination of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur in an inverse fluidized bed reactor (IFBR), with a 1.7 L nominal volume and 22 h HTR. This work was focused mainly in the oxidative part of the cycle of the sulfur, to find the conditions that favor the partial oxidation of sulfide to elemental sulfur and to facilitate its separation using this system. The sulfide and of the nitrogen loading speed were 70 mg S2-/L-d and 217 mg NO3 - -N/L-d which remained constant while acetate was fed at several C/N ratios (1.4, 1.1 and 1.25). During denitrifying conditions at a C/N ratio of 1.4, the main products were N2, CO2 and elemental sulfur (S°), with efficiencies of acetate consumption, nitrate and sulfide around 100% for all cases. The elemental sulfur was not detected in the effluent due to the presence of exopolymeric substances (mainly proteins), that led to install a sedimentador at the exit of the IFBR to separate the elemental sulfur from the system, because of that the S° was detected inside the reactor. When the C/N ratio diminished from 1.4 to 1.1, the main products were N2, CO2 and SO4 2-, with efficiencies of acetate consumption, nitrate and sulfide of 100, 99.1 ± 1.26 and 90.4 % ± 4.5, respectively. The soluble protein content diminished in 70%, but the change in C/N ratio modified the metabolic path. Regarding to the results at C/N ratio of 1.25, the main products were N2, CO2 and SO4 2- , with efficiencies of acetate consumption, nitrate and sulfide of 100% for all cases. These results indicate that the control of the C/N ratio in the denitrification for the elimination of C, N and S is indispensable to obtain the wanted sulfurated product apart from that the denitrification is an alternative process for the simultaneous elimination of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur from effluents of the Petrochemical Industry.
