Sumario:Historically, children have been considered immature beings, in a transition stage, in need of protection and care. They are sent to school or made to stay at home, where it is possible to provide them with knowledge and skills that will help them become adults; however, working children are those who challenge the established social order. For this reason, it is important to ask; why do children work? Does work help them mature? What does it mean for them to work? In this article 21 children that work were approached and interviewed all in the Tepic (Nayarit, Mexico), using a qualitative ethnographic methodology, in accordance with the constructionist and relational approaches of the Sociology of Childhood, This allowed us to access into the personal constructions and meanings that these children attribute to their activities, and identify the motivations for working. And why they like to work.
