The disappearance of dry matter in the rumen in a time lapse of 96 h yielded an 85% digestibility estimate for M. pyrifera and 54.83% for Sargassum spp., with an estimated rate of degradability of 0.03 and 0.05, respectively. Crude protein analysis indicated that the 8.40% estimated for M. pyrifera and 5.99% for Sargassum spp. are not degraded in the rumen (P < 0.01). In vitro analysis suggests that these proteins may function as bypass proteins to be digested in the abomasum. Mineral analysis confírmed a high yield by these macroalgae. The overall analysis supports the use of these species as a complementary meal for ruminants and M. pyrifera as a better choice because of its higher nutritional value.Una alternativa para el aprovechamiento de Macrocystis pyrifera y Sargassum spp. es utilizándolas como forraje, lo que resulta económico y requiere de tecnología sencilla y accesible. En este estudio se determinó la composición química, aporte energético, degradabilidad in situ y digestibilidad ruminal de M. pyrifera y Sargassum spp. Ambas algas son consideradas como forraje de bajo aporte energético. La desaparición de materia seca en intervalos de incubación hasta de 96 h resultó en un 85.36% de digestibilidad para M. pyrifera y 54.83% para Sargassum spp., con una tasa de degradación de 0.03 y 0.05, respectivamente. El análisis de proteína cruda indicó que los valores estimados de 8.40% y 5.99% no son degradados en el rumen (P < 0.01). Sin embargo, los análisis in vitro mostraron que pueden funcionar como proteínas de sobrepaso que son digeridas en el abomaso.
