Resumo:The purpose of this article is to delve into the links between municipal urban management and planning for the metropolitan area of Mexico City. Several preliminary considerations are discussed regarding the process of institutionalization of urban planning in Mexico. A description is given of the insitutional framework within which local levels of government participate in metropolitan planning. In addition, various illustrative examples are provided of the way in which urban planning procedures have recently come to serve as an important point of reference for local urban policies. To conclude the discussion, several reflections on the impact of urban planning upon the characteristics and effects of local urban management are put forward.
