| Summary: | This article proposes an analysis of the short story “La leyendade la torre” by Emilia Pardo Bazán based on the concepts offocalization and narrator exposed by Mieke Bal and Luz Aurora Pimentel. Its aim is to establish a link between the narrators in the story and the critical considerations in relation to the naturalist debate, which Pardo Bazán examines in La cuestión palpitante. Likewise, it establishes a relationship with the genre of the legend while refuting its most common clichés: the insertion of fantastic elements and its oral character. It is concluded that the story is structured around the confrontation of two narrators (one idealist and the other naturalist) that results in a subversion of idealist literature and naturalist thought. This subversion is effected through an emphasis on the haughty language of the narrator, who is characterized as a naturalist, and through a reworking of a recurring theme in idealist literature: the story of a woman who, overcome by the loss of her lover, dies and becomes a restless spirit. |
