The deployment of these devices in homes, however, raises privacy concerns for bystanders¿people who may not necessarily have a say in the deployment and configuration of these devices, and yet are exposed to or affected by their data collection. Examples of bystanders include guests, short-term tenants, and domestic workers. Prior work has studied the privacy concerns of different bystander groups and proposed design solutions for addressing these concerns. In this article, we present a systematic review of previous studies, describing how smart home bystanders are defined and classified, and illuminating the range of concerns and solutions proposed in the existing academic literature. We also discuss limitations in prior work, barriers to the uptake of research-based solutions by industry, and identify avenues for future research. This work was supported in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation (award CNS-2114229), a King s-China Scholarship Council (K-CSC) PhD Scholarship, and the INCIBE s strategic SPRINT C063/23 project with funds from the EU-NextGenerationEU through the Spanish government s Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia.Association for Computing MachineryDepartamento de Sistemas Informáticos y ComputaciónEscuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería InformáticaInstituto Universitario Valenciano de Investigación en Inteligencia ArtificialNational Science Foundation, EEUURepositorio Institucional de la Universitat Politècnica de València Riunet20252025-10-01journal articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501VoRhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85info:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://riunet.upv.es/handle/10251/235300reponame:RiuNet.
