Sumario:[EN] The research focuses on the Gothic architectural project in Spain, through a specific case study: the layout of the church of San Esteban in Salamanca, which was carried out by Juan de Álava in 1524. Its formal and structural design processes are analysed, two aspects that have rarely been studied together. To this end, the  knowledge  of  the  Gothic  masters,  known  from  drawings  and  treatises  of  the  period,  is  considered.  The  process of drawing the layout is analysed based on the incised auxiliary lines. These formed a simple orthogonal grid,  which  served  formal  and  structural  design.  This  structural  design  is  compared  with  the  rules  of  some  Central European treaties, which used elementary numerical proportions. These proportions are also evident in the study plan. The San Esteban plan was designed considering both formal and dimensional aspects. These elements are essential for proposing graphic hypotheses that accurately reflect the knowledge of that time. This research enables a more comprehensive understanding of this important Spanish late Gothic drawing and highlights the need for a solid epistemological and methodological basis for its study.
