Th e most ancient unequivocal references to the cave belong to the last years of 16th century, although its frequentation is immemorial going back to the prehistoric times. At the end of the 19th century the cave became increasingly famous, thanks to the disclosure of its natural values by the Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria; under his patronage was promoted the realization in 1880 of the fi rst topographic survey of the cave, drawn by Friedrich Will, as well as the remarkable explorations and discoveries made by Édouard Alfred Martel in 1896. During the 20th century is when most of the contributions to the naturalistic and scientifi c knowledge of the Coves del Drac took place, contributions that intensify the last decades until today. In addition to reviewing its main historical aspects, an exhaustive bibliographical analysis of the numerous references to this important cave is carried out.[spa] En este trabajo se efectúa un detenido repaso de los datos históricos relacionados con el conocimiento de las Coves del Drac, así como con su acondicionamiento y explotación para la visita turística; en este sentido, a lo largo del siglo XX esta cueva se convierte en uno de los motores del turismo en Mallorca, llegando a ser la cueva turística más visitada de Europa. Las referencias inequívocas más antiguas sobre la cavidad se sitúan al fi nal del siglo XVI, aunque su frecuentación es inmemorial remontándose a los tiempos prehistóricos. A fi nales del siglo XIX la cueva va adquiriendo progresiva fama, gracias a la divulgación de sus valores naturales por parte del Archiduque Luis Salvador de Austria; esta personalidad auspiciará la realización del primer plano de la cueva en 1880, elaborado por Friedrich Will, así como las exploraciones y descubrimientos efectuados por Édouard Alfred Martel el año 1896. Durante el siglo XX es cuando se producen la mayor parte de las aportaciones al conocimiento naturalístico y científi co de las Coves del Drac, contribuciones que se intensifi can las últimas décadas hasta llegar al momento actual.
