| Resumo: | Bernat Desclot finished writing his Chronicle at the end of the 13th century, but it was not published until 1616, in a Spanish translation written by the Barcelona historian and politician Rafael Cervera. The reasons for this late publication and the peculiarities of the historical moment, that was influenced by the tensions between Catalonia and Spain which then led to the War of the Segadors, have not been studied in depth yet until now. By means of this thesis we try to place the translation, significantly entitled Historia de Cataluña, within the rich and fruitful Catalan tradition of historiography. Specifically, the translation is most clearly in the Barcelona tradition of historiography which in the course of the decades 1620-1630 was responsible for rescuing from oblivion the great figures of the old Catalan empire, with clear praiseworthy intentions. We have included a critical edition of the translation, the first one that has ever been produced, as well as an appendix with complementary information about the author, his work and the Early modern period of Catalan historiography. |
