Soil_temp_humidity_hobo.csv – Continuous soil temperature and moisture measurements recorded by HOBO loggers during the experiment.This dataset provides soil respiration and soil biogeochemical measurements collected during a soil respiration partitioning experiment conducted in grassland and oak woodland ecosystems at Wilder Ranch State Park (Santa Cruz, California, USA). The experiment was designed to quantify the relative contributions of roots, mycorrhizal fungi, and free-living soil microorganisms to total soil respiration. Measurements were collected between November 2014 and February 2015 from experimental plots located on two marine terraces differing in soil age and nutrient availability (Young: 92 kyr; Old: 137 kyr). In grassland plots, soil respiration was partitioned using a mesh exclusion technique that allowed separation of three soil community components: Total Soil Community (TSC), Root-Free Soil Community (RFSC), and Bulk Soil Only (BSO). Soil respiration was measured using a Li-Cor 6400 infrared gas analyzer with a custom soil chamber, together with concurrent measurements of soil and air temperature. The dataset consists of four complementary files: (1) repeated soil respiration measurements with environmental variables, (2) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) root colonization data, (3) soil physicochemical properties measured at the end of the experiment including soil carbon, nitrogen, C:N ratio, root biomass, and AM fungal hyphal length, and (4) continuous soil temperature and moisture records obtained from HOBO sensors. These data support research on soil carbon cycling, ecosystem respiration, plant–soil interactions, and the ecological role of mycorrhizal fungi in Mediterranean-type ecosystems. The dataset can be used for ecological analyses, model development, and comparative studies of soil respiration drivers across vegetation types and soil conditions.Lab, field, and office support at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) came from the USGS Climate and Land Use Research & Development Program.
