Perceptions of the Spanish Penalty Point Law
In Spain, as in most parts of the European Union, traffic accidents are one of the main causes of death amongst young people. Over 5,000 people aged between 16 and 24 years old die every year in the EU, with more than 700 of these deaths occurring in Spain (European Road Safety Observatory, 2008). O...

| Sumario: | In Spain, as in most parts of the European Union, traffic accidents are one of the main causes of death amongst young people. Over 5,000 people aged between 16 and 24 years old die every year in the EU, with more than 700 of these deaths occurring in Spain (European Road Safety Observatory, 2008). One of the more recent attempts by the Spanish government to reduce the number of road deaths and injuries has been through the introduction of a penalty point licence law. This measure was introduced in July 2006, and was motivated by the experience of countries like the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Luxemburg. However, this law was not a popular measure amongst young people, who doubted it would increase safe driving, and agreement with the law was higher amongst older drivers (Sánchez-Martín, 2004). |
