| Sumario: | [EN]Although high-quality evidence is lacking, it is suggested to perform a frenotomy if breastfeeding difficulties associated with ankyloglossia are reported. In order to assess whether the frenotomy is safe and provides benefits in the short and long term, an observational, descriptive and retrospective study was designed with 206 infants of 34 or more weeks of gestation who had undergone a frenotomy due to ankyloglossia and breastfeeding difficulties. The degree of ankyloglossia was assessed according to the C Genna and E Coryllos classification; and breastfeeding was assessed using the Bristol Breastfeeding Assessment Tool (BBAT). If the difficulties persisted after modifying the position, the frenotomy was performed. The IBM SPSS Statistics 25 program was used to perform a descriptive analysis; a study of frequencies; the Chi Square test (X2); a T-student test for paired data; and a regression line. The quality of the socket improved after the frenotomy (4.875 vs. 7.580; p=0.000); and, in the long term, 76.9% continued to exclusively breastfeed for 4 months or more, which was associated with less pain when breastfeeding (p=0.001) and shorter and more spaced feedings (p=0.027). The complication rate was very low.Frenotomy performed on infants with breastfeeding difficulties is a safe procedure that leads to a significant improvement in the quality of breastfeeding, reduces pain during breastfeeding and the duration of feedings, which contributes to prolonging exclusive breastfeeding. |
