| Sumario: | This article examines how the Church confronted the establish- ment of the Republic and the religious politics practiced during the «Reformist Biennium». The response was not monolithic. On one level, the Vatican adopted a practical stance that differed from the ma- jority position of the Spanish Episcopate, which rejected the republican regime outright. On another level, an increasingly laicized society received a successful response from Catholic secular organizations. The article concludes with as an example that demonstrates these contrasting political attitudes. It explores the variety of positions of Catholic priests who served as members of parliament and highlights the role of «social priests». El presente artículo estudia la posición de la Iglesia ante la instauración de la República y la política religiosa practicada durante el bienio reformista. Su respuesta no fue monolítica. Se analiza, en primer lugar, el posibilismo vaticano, que contrastó con el rechazo mayoritario del episcopado español ante el régimen republicano, y, en segundo lugar, cómo el pulso laicista encontró la respuesta exitosa de las organizaciones seglares católicas. Por último, como ejemplo de contraste de actitudes políticas, se trata la variedad de posicionamientos de los clérigos diputados y se destacan algunos casos de «curas sociales». |
