Integrated optical sensorsLechuga, Laura M.Optical waveguidesEvanescent waveIntegrated opticsBiospecific molecular interaction7 páginas, 7 figuras.Evanescent wave optical sensors are analytical devices that measure the interaction between complementary molecules in real time, without the need of labels. The selective receptor molecules are immobilised on the sensor surface and a solution with the complementary analyte is flowing over the surface. Binding is measured by changes in the refractive index due to the molecular interaction near the sensor surface within ihe evanescent region. In this way, evanescent wave sensors are selective and sensitive devices for the detection of very low levels of chemicals and biological substances and for the measurement of molecular interactions in-situ and in real time. Several of these sensors have been reported in the literature in the last decade: the grating coupler, the vibrating mirror, the difference refractometer, the Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, among the most important ones. Actually, there are two commercial devices on the market.
