Descrição
Resumo:[EN]This article aims primarily to investigate the publication, in 1835, of Compêndio da gramática da língua nacional by Antônio Álvares Pereira Coruja, regarded as a landmark in Brazilian linguistic studies. We seek to reconstitute, on different levels of analysis, the publication of the work and its recognition as a historical milestone in the 1930s, in order to reflect on certain tensions between language and nation(s) in the negotiations surrounding the newly founded Brazilian Empire. For this historical reconstruction, focused on Coruja and the Compêndio, we consider the strengthening of “print capitalism”, drawing on Benedict Anderson, as well as recent transformations in the educational and political systems, regional tensions, and elements of the history of linguistic ideas.
